Quarter Horses - Description

Quarter Horses have a distinctively muscular and robust appearance. They are smaller than other horses, but they have long and strongly developed legs and powerful hindquarters. That is particularly visible from behind, and that is why most photographers shoot photographs of Quarter Horses from behind.

The head of the Quarter Horse is small, and the eyes are spaced widely apart. Ears are small and sharp. The muzzle is short and the nostrils are big. The clearly cut jawbones are set well apart. The neck is sloping, muscular and crested. The chest is broad and deep, muscled front legs are set wide apart. This adds a lot to the animal's overall tough appearance. The back is straight, short and tense. The underline tucks up near the thighs. The croup is round and massive.

American Quarter Horses occur in 13 distinctive colors, the sorrel color being the most desirable. There are also gray, gray-brown, red dun, gray beige with a reddish or bluish tint, grullo, palomino, bay, brown, buckskin, chestnut and black. Quarter Horses may have white markings on the muzzle and on the lower parts of the legs.

Quarter Horses - Ancestry

American Quarter horses are descendants of Arab, Barb and Turk horses, which arrived in America with Spanish colonists. Later, a crossing with English and Irish breeds occurred. Breeders strove to develop pure and decent bloodlines by adding Hobby and Thoroughbred mixes. Those were high quality breeds and contemporary American Quarter Horses in many ways owe their remarkable traits and qualities to them.
