If you are going to devote your life to raising and breeding Quarter Horses, you have to make sure that your current species are really worth breeding. Your horse must at least rank 'above average' in performance, progeny, pedigree and reproduction. In breeding of any animals whatsoever, it is imperative that descendants do better than their predecessors otherwise there is zero chance that the Quarter Horse breed will have
a future.
All breeding-intended that Quarter Horses (both stallions and mares) should undergo regular health examinations. Quarter Horses are frequently prone to genetic diseases; therefore, breeders must lay strict emphasis on checking for inherited deviations by analyzing all pedigree lines. This is only possible with the aid of a well-qualified veterinarian.
Breeding-intended horses need a rich and variable nutritional balance. It is necessary to provide grains and grasses that contain the amount of nutritional elements, which would be enough to 'prompt' the mare, that the reproduction time is coming.
Pregnant mares need constant scrutinizing by a veterinarian. Any illness that occurs during pregnancy requires treatment in ways determined by the mare's current condition, which tend to be different at various stages. Parasites and infections are major aggravating factors; hence, one must pay special attention to preventive measures.
After 7 months of pregnancy, the fetus begins to grow rapidly, and at this time, the mare needs increasingly rich nutrition. Food must contain enough phosphor and calcium to provide building material to the promptly evolving skeleton of the foal. It is important for a mare to maintain a good physical condition throughout the entire gestation period through regular and moderate exercise in order to avoid overweight.
Gestation averages around 330-340 days (research has shown, that artificial light stimulation can reduce the gestation period by 10 days). Birth usually takes place around midnight, ranging between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m. Mares have the ability to hold back the birth. They often do it if there are irritating factors, such as unfavorable weather conditions or the place is overcrowded or noisy. Proper care during pregnancy and birth assistance are crucial factors in the production of fit and valuable Quarter Horses.
